Scott's New Diet

Some of you may know that Scott has been having some health problems over the past 8 years or so.  One of the biggest issues is that he has had a lot of trouble with his esophagus, making it difficult, sometimes impossible, to swallow food or drink.

After several tests, years of seeing specialists, having scopes, getting his esophagus "stretched out" several times, trying prescription drugs, and more, nothing has helped.

Last fall our family doctor called up to let us know that a new test was being done regarding his condition and food allergies.  Scott agreed to try it out.

His first round of allergy testing was the typical pricks up and down the arm.  Nothing significant was found there.

The second round involved several metal plates attached to his back for 48 hours.  They tested for 20 different foods, and I'm not sure how they selected which foods to test for.

The results came back showing that he had a strong allergic reactions to soya and chicken.  And moderate allergic reactions to potato and cornmeal.  Wheat was inconclusive.

So, for 2 months Scott largely avoided 4 foods - chicken, potato, soya, or cornmeal.

By far the hardest one was the soya, as there is soy in so many foods.  If you read food labels you will know what I mean.  Soy is in almost every sauce and salad dressing.  It's in crackers, cookies, even things you would never think of such as Pam (non-stick spray) and chocolate bars.

I don't know that he completely avoided every single one of these for the entire 2 months, but he did pretty well overall.

The results?  Nothing.  Sometimes he would go a day or so and be able to swallow, but he didn't notice a marked improvement in his swallowing.

At Aunt Heather's funeral, we heard that his cousin has a very strong gluten allergy.  This is not surprising as Scott's Grandpa had celiac disease, and at least 2 of his aunt and uncles also had problems with gluten.

Scott has never been tested for gluten allergies or celiac disease, other than the metal plates which tested for wheat but were inconclusive.  However, with some encouragement from family members who were more familiar with the gluten problems in his extended family, he decided to add gluten to his list of foods to avoid, and has been gluten free since January 30.

During the 2 week period so far, he has not had any problems with his esophagus.

The only exception was once, 2 days ago, when he accidentally ate flour in a sauce at a restaurant and couldn't swallow a few hours later.

We're not jumping to conclusions, but it has been very interesting to witness him being able to eat and drink normally every day for the first time in many, many years.

If we find that this is the only lifetime solution to Scott's health problems, then I am ready to take on this new challenge.  I say "I" because, let's be honest, I do about 99.9% of the cooking and grocery shopping around here.

However, I'm very selfishly hoping he will be able to add in some of the other foods such as potato, chicken, and soy, as it is getting really hard to cook for the whole family. Many days I cook separately for Scott.

So far I have managed to cook a few dinners a week without chicken, soy, potatoes, pasta, bread, pizza, tortillas, etc.

But I think I can speak for the other 6 of us when I say that we are a little sick of rice.  Scott has said he will never tire of it.  What a trooper.  (Thank goodness he lived in Taiwan for 2 years.)  But he does miss the soy sauce, teriyaki, and other flavours that would usually go with it.

So, that's the update for now.  If you have any great meal ideas or recipes, please send them my way.

Our Play On! Anniversary Weekend

This past weekend kicked off the first of 17 Play On! events we will have in 2011. Remarkably, all of these events will be held over the next 6 weeks.

We had a great event in Hamilton! Except for the lousy weather, it was really an outstanding weekend.

Scott and I celebrated our 12th Wedding Anniversary on Sunday, and it was definitely a memorable day.

Scott spent the weekend walking the site, talking to players, putting out fires, and training the Hamilton team on the ins and outs of running a Play On! event.

This is where I spent the weekend, in the Scoreboard Tent:

I prefer to stay as dry as possible.

I was really touched that during a busy event day, others would take the time to play a song for us from our first date (thanks, Jeff!), make a loud-speaker announcement, send text messages & emails, and join us for cake, which we ate off paper plates in the Registration tent.

We came home that night to a kitchen full of gifts from our children:

It might take us a while to get through all of those cookies... !

I am truly blessed to have such a wonderful husband. Scott is a devoted, thoughtful husband and a fun, caring, and loving father to our children, and I love being married to my best friend. Happy Anniversary!

Confessions from a Mean Mom

My children often accuse me of being the meanest Mom ever.

I admit that I struggle daily as a Mom. I am not a very patient person. I have raised my voice, lost my cool, and have had parenting moments that I would change if I could go back.

But those aren't the things they complain about.

Here are some of the reasons why my kids think I am super mean:

I make them eat vegetables and other healthy food. And I don't fill their lunchbags with Fruit-roll-ups, chips, candy, or soda pop.

I make them brush their teeth and hair. And use soap to get clean in the bath. And wash their hands when they come in the house.

I make them go to bed "early" on school nights (early being 8:30 PM).

I make them tidy up their stuff, make their beds, empty the dishwasher, clean the bathrooms, etc.

I make them do their homework and practice the piano. And learn theory.

I make them apologize and hug each other when they have a fight.

I don't let them play DSi 24 hours a day. I don't even let them keep their DSi's in their own possessions.

Oh, and I put Clara in time-out when she's naughty. I get all kinds of evil eyes when this is going on.

As you can see, I'm definitely up there on the Mean Mom list.

My own Mother has even accused me of being a mean - or should I say a strict - Mom. Because I make my kids wait until the cookies have cooled before they get to eat them.

Ironically, my kids are fine with the waiting part. They have seen homemade cookies so often that they think I'm mean because I don't buy them Oreos, Arrowroots, and Chips Ahoy.

Aaaaah, I just can't win on that one.

But that's okay, because the truth is... I make the cookies for Scott.

Learning the Hard Way

Scott got up at 5:30 AM this morning to drive to Toronto to catch a flight to the US for a business meeting he had tomorrow.

Unfortunately, his passport had just expired, so he didn't make it through US Border Patrol at the airport.

We didn't even think of checking it, as we were just in Florida a couple of weeks ago, and crossed the border twice without incident.

He came back to London, drove straight to the Passport Office, and had it renewed today. In fact, he's picking it up as I type this.

But, he's going to have to settle for a Conference Call tomorrow.

Live and learn!

Update: April Fool's and Other Random Thoughs

Some thoughts on what we've been up to lately:

1. Meaghan's concert on Thursday was so much fun! We all loved it!

2. Samantha woke up early (or stayed up late?) to play some April Fools Jokes on her brothers:

Brett was livid and couldn't wait to get the marker washed off. This wasn't surprising given that the boy is 8 years old and has never had his face painted (his choice). He refused to even let me snap a quick photo of the prank.

Jesse was indifferent, but washed his face before leaving for school.

Nathan loved it and wanted to leave it on all day. He thought the moustache made him look like one of the Super Mario Brothers.

3. I loved watching General Conference this past weekend. Especially the Sunday afternoon session. Elder Scott, Elder Robbins, and Elder Holland's talks were some of my favourites.

4. We all loved having Nana in town for the weekend! She taught Brett some Math tricks, danced with Clara to imaginary princess music, and listened to our kids play piano duets.

She also learned what happens when you don't lock the bathroom door at our house.

One minute she was enjoying a peaceful soak in the bathtub... Until the door flew open, Nathan ran in, and decided he needed to take a bath too.

5. Scott and I were able to attend a baby blessing on Sunday night at the home of some friends.

All I can say is newborn babies are precious beyond words. Holding a newborn baby makes me so happy. And sad. Because my children were that tiny once too. And now they are growing up and they do things like wipe my kisses off of their cheeks and foreheads.

6. This week Scott and I made trips (separately) to Toronto to work at the Bishop's Storehouse. He went on Monday with a group of friends and I went yesterday with 3 lovely ladies.

It was neat to see people working together to help those in need, and I was grateful to be part of it, even if just for a few short hours.

7. I think the best (worst) April Fool's Trick of all is that it snowed on Sunday! Spring, where are you??

Victoria

We had a great weekend at Nationals!

Scott and I stayed at the lovely Empress hotel.

I loved getting these cards on my pillow each night with the next day's weather forecast and a historical fact about the hotel.

Scott - all ready to play in the Celebrity Game on Saturday.

The Parliament building is stunning at night - this is right on the street where 3 of our 6 rinks were set up.

We found this fun and delicious seafood restaurant for our last dinner in Victoria. Really great food. Best seafood chowder ever.

The Nativity

Scott, Samantha, Brett, and JD were cast members in our Stake Nativity Pageant this year.

Scott was the innkeeper, Samantha was his daughter. Brett and JD were shepherds.

It was very simple, no speaking parts, just music and narration. The set was stunning. These photos don't do it justice.

I went to 2 of the 5 performances and really enjoyed it. Scott commented to me that he thought participating in the show was a wonderful way to bring the Christmas Spirit into the season.

Clara getting excited for the show to begin.

The second time we went she figured out how to climb onto the set.

Trying to get away and sneak back on stage.

This adorable photo was taken by our friend, Jayden. She has serious photography skills and she's only 16.

November Birthdays

JD & I both celebrated our birthdays this month.

My birthday was wonderful. Scott had planned a day in Toronto for the two of us. We went to the temple with some friends, ate ridiculously good food, did some quick shopping (new bedding from West Elm!) and ended the night with front row seats at Wicked.

Wicked was so good! We both loved it. Scott told me during the intermission that he was torn between watching the actual show and watching the orchestra and conductor, who were almost as entertaining as the people on stage.

Thank you Mom and Emma for watching our kids all day, and thanks Uncle Jeff for taking JD to his hockey practice.

Speaking of JD....

He has a party planned in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime we had dinner and cake on his actual birthday.

The pictures are stuck on my camera right now, so I dug through my older photos and started reminiscing about some of my favourite Jesse memories.

JD is such a special boy. So energetic and fun-loving, yet so sweet and tender underneath his extreme hyper-activeness.

He has really blossomed in the last few months and is doing well at the new school. His reading in English and French has improved dramatically and he has made lots of new friends.

He continues to excel at hockey and piano. He has a wicked slapshot.

He melts into a puddle when he sees his green blanket. And he still sucks his thumb, although after the dentist's lecture at his check-up today, he has promised to try (harder) to quit.

He drives me crazy pretty much on a daily basis... But when I think about how much I love him it brings tears to my eyes.

JD is generally a lot like his Dad. But he and I have plenty in common, besides our birthday month.

We both love shrimp. And babies. And getting our backs scratched.

Happy Birthday JD!

Two Thumbs Up

I turned 31 a couple of weeks ago.

Scott took me to Toronto, along with Samantha and Brett, to see The Sound of Music at the Princess of Whales Theatre.

It was an absolutely wonderful show, and I enjoyed it immensely.

It was also delightful to go out with just the older children for a night. We had some good talks, good food, and good laughs together before the show and they both enjoyed their first real theatrical experience.

A few of you have asked how it was or if I would recommend it. My answer is yes - I highly recommend it and would see it again in a heartbeat!

Update: Conference Weekend

Scott has gone to Salt Lake City with three friends for General Conference this weekend. They went to a BYU football game on Friday night too, which Scott said was a lot of fun.

It's been cold and rainy, so the kids and I have been enjoying the indoors this with friends, movies, popcorn, blankets, and books. I even let the kids pull out the DS's that they have barely touched since our Alberta trip.

Today we are heading over to a friends' to watch the rest of Conference. Should be another great day.

It's hard to believe October is here already. All of a sudden when the weather got colder this week, I started thinking about needing to pack up the shorts and sandals and get out the vests and jackets...

And gourds, apples, pumpkins, & cinnamon. After all, next weekend is Thanksgiving! One of my favourite holidays. I LOVE fall.

10th Anniversary

Scott and I celebrated our 10th Anniversary today.

It's hard to believe we've been married for 10 years already! You know what they say - time flies when you're having fun... On the other hand, when I think of all that has transpired since we started our own little family one decade ago, it seems more and more like an amazingly short period of time.

One thing I love about Scott is that he is very thoughtful. He planned for us to celebrate this day a little early, with a surprise trip back in April, since he knew that this time of year is a tad busy (read: we don't sleep for 6 weeks straight).

He made arrangements for the kids, and we flew down to Salt Lake City for the weekend of General Conference.

I can't say enough about how much I loved that trip! It was the perfect Anniversary gift. The absolute combination of relaxation and fun, as we had 4 days with just the two of us, some old friends to reunite with, five sessions of Conference, a lovely hotel, and a bit of time leftover to sight-see and shop.

Also worth mentioning was dinner at a restaurant with a gorgeous view, heavenly cuisine, and, best of all, not a single chicken finger or plastic bib in sight.

After all that, we still got to celebrate today with lunch downtown and a fun date together while Lindsey & Jeff watched the kids. (Thanks, you two!)

Some highlights of the past 10 years together:

Becoming parents to our five amazing children (Best thing we've ever done, but definitely the hardest, bar none. Well, at least for me. Scott's such an awesome Dad that he often makes it look so easy.)

Scott graduating from a rigorous 2 year MBA program at UWO.

Starting up a business from nothing. Working and sacrificing to try to get it going, only to shut it down 3 years later.

Scott working 18 months in a job he couldn't stand for the benefit of his family.

Being blessed to go back to the job he enjoys and able to make it work this time around.

Traveling across this beautiful country together several times. From Halifax to Vancouver, and now, finally, Newfoundland in a month!

Also, more traveling to Dubai, Florida, New York (State and City), Utah, and enjoying time in Alberta for many summers.

If there's one thing we've learned, it's that we LOVE to travel together! Looking forward to many, many more trips in our future.

Having wonderful parents, siblings, in-laws, grandparents, nieces, nephews, and extended family. We love spending time with both sides of the family.

We have been blessed with so many fabulous friends. And fun traditions like Cookie Night on Sunday evenings. Good times.

Going up to the cottage in Tobermory. So many amazing memories, starting with the day we got engaged up there nearly 11 years ago.

Several church callings and service opportunities.

Being close to Scott's Mom as she has battled cancer. Watching in awe as she continues to press forward with an amazing attitude and zest for life.

Knowing that no matter what lies ahead, we have each other, and really, that's all that matters.

Happy Anniversary, Scott!

Easter Weekend

We celebrated a fun Easter weekend with friends and family.

Thursday I spent about 5 hours working on some Play On! stuff that I had told Scott I'd get done before the end of the week. Since it wasn't a school night, we went for a family walk to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

We stopped by a video store on the way home and rented Bolt. The kids thought it was pretty good, Scott went to bed partway through it, and I think I enjoyed it the most. It's a fun flick if you're looking for something to entertain the whole family.

Good Friday there was no school of course, and Scott took part of the day off. Our kids played outside with some neighbourhood friends during the day, and then later Samantha invited a friend from school to sleepover. They had fun setting up a "Spa" and invited Scott and me to come visit. They had scented lotion and body spray, back massages, fingernail and toenail painting (Scott opted out of that part) and some relaxing music and magazines.

On Saturday Scott left early in the morning for a huge building clean up he was in charge of at Church. He had over 90 people there and it was a huge success.

While Scott was working hard, the kids and I went out to Delaware for an Easter Egg Hunt with some friends. We ended up staying for lunch and the kids all played in the backyard since it was a beautiful day outside.

Saturday afternoon Samantha and I took on the crowds as we ventured out to Costco and Superstore for some groceries and and a fresh turkey for Easter dinner.

Saturday night we had a babysitter come watch the kids while we drove to Kitchener to see my friend Meaghan Smith in concert, opening for K.D. Lang.

(I managed to snap a couple of pictures before an usher came over to tell me that photos were strictly forbidden in this venue and that if I took one more she would be forced to confiscate my camera. So, it's kind of far away, but this is the best I could do...)

Sunday after church we had Easter dinner with Pat, Bill, Jeff, Lindsey & Tyler. I was so busy cooking, eating, and enjoying the day that I forgot to take a single picture.

Monday morning we went to the London Children's Museum with some friends. We came home and the kids played with friends before our Monday night BBQ. Scott did a great job with the steaks and salmon. We had some friends over along with Jeff & Lindsey again for a fun Family Home Evening.

Thanks to all of you who have called or emailed. We've been so busy these past few weeks that I sometimes forget it's been ages since I've been in touch or had a minute to post something on the blog.

We're still here... Doing fine... Just trying to figure out how to cram everything that has to get done every day into 24 meager hours. Usually we collapse from exhaustion at around 11:30 PM or so, even though we're only about 2/3 of the way down our "To Do" lists.

We still love you all and think of you often from under the piles of laundry and homework and Lego and diapers and hope that you're all doing well and that you had a wonderful Easter!

Play On! Nationals Weekend

This past weekend we had our Play On! National Championships in Windsor.

After Family Day on Monday (we had a fun Primary Activity at church about Families Around the World), we were glad to get some of the kids back in school so we could get organized and ready for the big weekend.

Scott had the usual pre-event stuff to do, including a trip to Toronto all day Wednesday to pick up the jerseys, coats, and other supplies.

I packed for the four older kids to go to Pat & Bill's house. Then I packed for Scott, Clara & myself to go to Windsor. Finally, I packed all of the Master Scoreboard supplies and printing.

Scott left Thursday morning in the big Discount truck and I left Thursday afternoon with all the kids. We stopped in at the Hills to drop off Nathan with Nana and pick up Papa, who was taking the older kids to a Spitfire Game after taking Clara and me to the hotel.

The tournament started on Friday morning. We had 16 teams from across the country, including Vancouver, Halifax, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal, and more.

I spent about 6 hours at the site before returning to the hotel with Clara because, did I mention that this event was outside? In February.

Yeah, it was really cold.

And even though I had Clara bundled with extra layers of clothes, 2 coats, snowpants and 3 blankets, her feet were still cold when I got her back to the hotel. I quickly put her in a nice warm bath, bundled her up again, cranked the heat, and put her down for a cozy nap in our hotel bed. Then I promptly fell asleep next to her. You know, to make sure she stayed nice and warm.

Saturday was the Playoffs, and we had CBC there covering the event as part of Hockey Day in Canada. Scott was interviewed by Scott Russell of CBC on national TV. The very end of the final game where the Redwood Cup was awarded to the winning team was also on CBC. We also had some local media coverage throughout the weekend.

You can read more details about the event here.

As it turned out, our other kids ended up joining me on Saturday morning. We decided to stay over one more night at the hotel as a family. Scott took the kids swimming, and we had take-out and watched movies and hung out.

We got home yesterday afternoon. Well, except for Scott, who had to do some more things in Windsor and will be back home sometime later today.

It was a really fun weekend, and I'm so proud of Scott for all the hard work he put into making it a huge success.

Update: Nathan' Soother

We had Pat & Bill here for dinner tonight, along with Jeff, Lindsey & Tyler. Lots of yummy food - it was a joint effort and turned out wonderfully - and it was really fun to visit and see everyone and hang out together talking and playing games.

Pat & Bill fly to California tomorrow to vacation at Disneyland with the Stewarts for a week! Scott's driving them to Toronto early tomorrow morning.

Nathan did the cutest thing last night. He was upstairs with Scott and I before bed (in our room) and Scott took his soother and put it in his own mouth for a tease. Nathan was trying to think of how to get it back without asking for it. He decided to start offering Scott things in return for his soother. It went something like this...

Nathan: Walk?

Scott shakes his head no.

Nathan: Book?

Scott shakes his head no.

Nathan: Cereal?

Scott shakes his head no.

Nathan was then stumped as to what else he could possibly offer. By this time we were so gaga over how cute this was that I think Scott just gave it to him, but I can't really remember.

I love watching his personality come out a little more every day. He is definitely a peace maker, and loves his siblings so much. He's always saying sweet and thoughtful things like "Whoops... sorry!" and "You okay?" He loves it when everyone is happy and laughing and always joins in on the laughter even if he doesn't "get it". He is very sensitive and perceptive to the general mood and atmosphere around him. He is truly a special boy.

I cannot believe he only has one more day to be ONE! I can't think about it too hard without getting emotional, so I'm just ignoring it for now.

Scott's Car Accident

So tonight was quite stressful. I'm pretty tired, so without going into a lot of detail, here's what happened.

At about 5:30 PM, Scott went to pick up Samantha & Jesse, who had been having a play day. These friends live on a very steep road, which is currently covered almost completely in ice.

Scott got about 3/4 of the way up the hill, when the Magnum fishtailed, lost control, and slid backwards into a snow bank and a telephone box (I'm not exactly sure what these are called, but picture a metal box with cables inside).

He couldn't back out because of the box, and he couldn't go forward because he was stuck in 2-3 feet of snow and ice going uphill. He called me to come pick up the kids and take them home, then called our Roadside Assistance.

When the tow truck arrived, they called the police (because of the damage to the box) and then tried, unsuccessfully to get the Magnum out. Finally, with the help of Jeff, who arrived with his Jeep (4 x 4) about 45 minutes after the tow truck, they were able to get Scott out.

The police weren't done with Scott though, and were threatening to charge him with reckless driving and fine him for not having valid plates and insurance.

First of all, they were upset that the call came from the tow truck, and not Scott himself, and were really mad that he damaged the box thing.

Second, our plates expired last week, and we've had the renewals on the side of our fridge for weeks, but hadn't gotten around to renewing them yet.

Third, when Scott made the call to Roadside Assistance from inside the van (when I was picking up the kids) he had left all of the documents from the Magnum on the front seat of the van, which was at home, so he couldn't produce them for the officer at the scene.

The officer followed him home, where he produced the insurance documents and explained the situation regarding the ice and the slipping, etc. and finally the police decided not to charge or fine him after all.

By the time the officer left our house it was after 9:00 PM. I had long since missed Ward Council and the kids were still a bit worked up about everything (getting stuck, Dad being gone so long, the police coming over) so they were having a hard time getting to sleep.

Anyway, it's all over now, and I'm so thankful everything worked out fine. The only thing damaged is our rear bumper, and I guess we'll have to take a look in the morning to see if it's worth filing an insurance claim.

Scott had a little "procedure" done yesterday, for lack of a better word. He's been having this swallowing problem for several years now, but the doctors have just given him drugs for it because they really didn't know the cause. Every time he said it was still bothering him he'd get a new prescription. Finally, he went back to the specialist and he said that he'd do another scope (which involves putting him under) and also stretch out the esophagus. So he went in for that on Thursday morning.

I went to pick him up a few hours later and he was totally walking around. Seriously, they just sent him on his way, and I found him at the front door of the hospital all alone. He was pretty out of it, and had to come home and sleep for a few hours. He has been eating fine so far. I'm really hoping this will help with the swallowing. I'm sure we'll be able to tell in few more days.

Today we are having a bad winter storm. So bad that the schools were actually closed (and that almost never happens in the city).

Here are 5 reasons why I'm not loving the snow day:

1. It was my last day to get STUFF DONE before Christmas while the 3 kids were at school
2. Samantha is getting a new teacher in January, and it was her last day with Mme L.F. (and she had a substitute yesterday, so she was sad about that)
3. Brett had a class party and was all ready with his game to bring in
4. Jesse also had a class party and had his veggie platter all ready to go
5. Did I mention it's hard to get lots of things accomplished with 5 kids at home all day?

Here are 5 reasons why I'm loving the snow day:

1. We can eat the veggie platter tonight with leftover chicken (no cooking dinner)
2. I went out last night and stocked up on everything we could possibly need so we wouldn't have to leave the house at all for a few days
3. We get to start Christmas holidays a day early!
4. Samantha (and sometimes the boys) help by playing with Nathan when I'm busy
5. Scott ventured out in the storm to take the kids skating this morning and they practically had the whole rink to themselves

Now off to fold some laundry and clean while both babies are napping. I'm hoping for at least another hour... is that too much to ask?

Saturday, December 13, 2008

Yesterday Scott turned 34. We had a pretty low-key day. Hung out at home. He took Jesse skating in the morning. I went Visiting Teaching in the afternoon. We had Jeff & Lindsey over for Chinese take-out for dinner, and then we got a babysitter and went to the Puddicombe's Christmas Party. There was a great turnout, and we played a fun gift exchange game. Scott came home with one of the gifts we brought (2 really nice flashlights) and I came home with a wooden Christmas Moose and some tree ornaments. We did have birthday cake there too, but it wasn't a particularly special day.

That's okay, Scott made up for it today by going shopping for an amazing (read: crazy expensive) stereo sound system, which he is assembling this very minute.

I spent this morning preparing for our Primary Service Activity, which we had this afternoon at the McCormick Nursing Home. It was a fun celebration of Christmas Card making, singing, and birthday cake (for those having birthdays this month). We all came home with that warm, mushy feeling you get when you do something completely unselfish to uplift another. We had 17 children there, and I think they all had a good time. I know our kids really enjoyed it.

Hockey Night in Canada, a tradition for Saturday nights. All three boys fell asleep watching the third period on our bed. So cute. All cozy with their blankies. Love it!

I ran to Loblaws with Samantha to get a "couple things" for tomorrow and we ended up there for almost an hour looking at cute stuff. It's fun to have a girl to shop with. She came home and finished writing her Primary talk for tomorrow. Now I need to tidy up so I can go to bed at a semi-decent hour (hopefully before midnight).

Mark Your Calendars... I've Decided to Turn 30 Again Next Week

Thanks to everyone who called, emailed, facebooked, stopped by, sent a card, or sent a gift to wish me a happy birthday yesterday! I am truly blessed to have such wonderful family and friends and I really appreciate all of your kind gestures.

I also want to boast about how incredibly thoughtful and amazing my husband is, and thank him, again, for a fabulous day!

On Monday I received this email from Scott:

Just want to make sure you clear your day on Wednesday.

Here’s our plan for your “very exciting, hard to really believe it, but it is here” 30th Birthday:

I’m taking the whole day off to watch the kids.

9:00am – 1:00pm: You have an appointment at Fayez beauty Spa. Bring your bathing suit.

1:30pm: Meet me downtown for lunch at Blue Ginger (Clara will be with us for this part)

3:00pm: You’ll be heading to Masonville Mall, and/or anywhere else you want to go. All for you, no buying for anyone else. Clara stays with me, I will feed her from the milk in the freezer.

7:45pm: Come home, I’m making dinner, have a quick bite to eat, watch a movie with me, I’ll have the kids in bed and some popcorn ready too.

Now, I ask you, with a day like that, what girl wouldn't love to turn the big 3-0?!

He also picked up a delicious black forest cake so we could have a little celebration with the kids before bedtime.

Speaking of the kids, check out these adorable cards:

(I know it may be obvious to some of you, but for those non-pokemon lovers out there, this is a Pokemon card made by Brett. Yes, my very own Squirtle card, 50 HP no less!)

As it turns out, we postponed the shopping trip, as my Mother-in-law had to get rushed in for another emergency surgery yesterday, and Scott spent the afternoon at the hospital with her. Everything seems to be fine now, although the doctors still aren't sure why her arm started bleeding so much. Thanks to all who have been praying and fasting for Pat. I know that she has felt strengthened by you. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

If you're in London and get a chance to look at the London Free Press today, there's an article about Play On! with a picture of Scott. It's not huge, but it is on the front page.

If you're not in London, check out the article online (minus the photo):
